Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) (hi-drad-uh-NIE-tis sup-yoo-ruh-TIE-vuh) is a chronic skin disease. It can occur in one or multiple areas of your body. The condition causes small, painful lumps, boils or abscesses to form under the skin. The lesions can break open, or tunnels can form under the skin. The condition mostly affects areas where the skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks and breasts. It causes long-term skin inflammation and can be painful.
Hidradenitis suppurativa most commonly occurs in women between the ages of 18 and 29. It can persist for many years and worsen over time.
